Cybersecurity has become one of the central concerns for businesses and governments worldwide, with the frequency and complexity of cyberattacks on the rise. Protecting digital infrastructure is a key concern in both the public and private sectors. Attacks on networks, data, and systems can result in significant economic damage and pose serious threats to national security.

To address this growing challenge, companies and authorities must implement comprehensive security measures. The EU has established regulatory frameworks such as the NIS-2 Directive (Second Network and Information Security Directive) and the Cyber Resilience Act to support these efforts.

How can IT systems be effectively protected in practice?

The most effective defense against digital intrusions is to create a true physical separation, known as an air gap, between IT systems to ensure secure data transfer.

The IHSE Group has developed a robust, user-friendly, and security-certified protection concept which enables the convenient and seamless operation of physically separated systems. This approach ensures the integrity of all systems unaffected by an attack. For 40 years, IHSE has been developing and manufacturing high-security KVM systems of exceptional quality – made in Germany.

KVM Technology as the Core and Control Hub of Digital Workflows

KVM technology enables multiple computers to be controlled using a single keyboard, mouse, and one or more monitors. KVM stands for Keyboard, Video, and Mouse — the standard input and output devices at a workstation. This technology allows computers and workstations to be separated by several kilometers, providing an easy way to protect computers from unauthorized access by relocating them in secure server rooms. At the workstation, only monitors, keyboards, and mice are required.

KVM systems are used in all types of control rooms and operations centers. In addition to ensuring efficient and streamlined workflows, these systems offer the highest level of security. Modern IP technology also enables secure remote access, including from home offices.

Einfacher Aufbau eines KVM-Systems
Simple setup of a KVM system

Protection Against Cyberattacks with KVM Systems

KVM systems provide multiple layers of protection that go beyond securing data by relocating computers to safeguarded server rooms. Advanced security mechanisms proactively prevent data theft and offer robust protection against both external and internal threats

  • Physical Security: Storing computers in secure rooms prevents unauthorized access, tampering, and sabotage.
  • Eavesdrop-Proof Data Transmission: Connections between remote computers and workstations use proprietary (manufacturer-specific), encrypted, and eavesdrop-proof transmission protocols, making them immune to hacking
  • Access Controls: Operators must authenticate themselves and are subject to configurable access rules
  • Data Theft Prevention: Workstations are designed to prevent external manipulation or espionage
  • Network Isolation: The central switch (control hub) is physically separated from the IP network, preemptively isolating hacking attempts
  • Ease of System Expansion: KVM systems can be expanded during operation without compromising security or workflows
  • Security Certifications: IHSE solutions are certified, including Common Criteria EAL4+, demonstrating their exceptional suitability for use in high-security environments

Conclusion

KVM solutions play a key role in the secure and efficient management of multiple networks and systems. As threats continue to grow, KVM systems are becoming the global standard for enhancing IT infrastructure security. However, these solutions must meet the highest security requirements to protect a company’s “crown jewels” – its most valuable and critical data, systems, and resources. With IHSE as your KVM partner, you are securely protected against cyber threats!

The NIS2 Directive (Directive on a high common level of cybersecurity across the European Union) of the European Union places comprehensive requirements on companies and organizations that operate critical infrastructures. Effective implementation of this directive requires not only the strengthening of cyber security, but also the efficient and secure management of IT resources. KVM extensions and KVM matrix solutions play an essential role in this field. KVM stands for keyboard, video, mouse, the typical peripheral devices at a workstation.

1. Improving security through centralized control

KVM extensions enable centralized control of multiple servers or virtual machines from a single console. This minimizes the number of physical access points and thus reduces the risk of unauthorized access. The ability to monitor and control all systems from a single point is of great importance for implementing the NIS2 guideline which prescribes strict requirements for access to critical systems.

2. Support for isolation and segmentation

The NIS2 guideline requires the implementation of security measures that enable the segmentation of networks and systems. KVM matrix solutions support this requirement by making it possible to operate different servers and virtual machines in isolated environments without changing the physical infrastructure. This segmentation can help to prevent the spread of security incidents within a network, which is one of the main aspects of the NIS2 guideline.

3. Optimizing access management

KVM systems also provide access management capabilities required by the NIS2 policy. By implementing role-based access controls, organizations can ensure that only authorized employees have access to sensitive systems and data. This enables comprehensive logging and monitoring of access attempts, which is relevant for audits and compliance requirements.

4. Increasing availability and resilience

In addition to security aspects, the NIS2 directive places particular emphasis on the availability of critical services. KVM matrix solutions offer features such as redundant connections and automatic failover mechanisms. This ensures that uninterrupted performance can be guaranteed in the event of a hardware failure or an attack on a system. High availability is essential for maintaining user confidence and keeping services up and running.

5. Support during incident response

In the event of a security incident, a quick response is crucial. KVM technologies can be integrated into incident response plans by enabling IT teams to quickly access and inspect affected systems. Centralized control and monitoring through KVM extensions makes it easier to perform forensics and analyze incidents.

Conclusion

KVM extensions and matrix solutions provide a robust infrastructure to support the requirements of the NIS2 Directive. By ensuring secure, centralized control, optimizing access rights, and ensuring availability and resilience, they play a crucial role in protecting critical infrastructure and data. In the face of increasing threats in cyberspace, the implementation of such technologies is of central importance for companies that want to be NIS2 compliant.

At IHSE we are at the forefront of technologies by providing highly secure proprietary and IP KVM technology. Our solutions are characterized by the highest reliability, lowest cost of ownership and meet sustainabiity goals by achieving the lowest carbon foodprint in the industry.

Oberteuringen, September 11, 2024 – IHSE launches the world’s first KVM extender with revolutionary JPEG XS technology. Developed in collaboration with the inventors of mp3 at the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits, the JPEG XS codec enables an extremely high compression ratio with visually lossless image display.

Cost benefits through low bandwidth requirement

KVM extenders deploying the innovative JPEG XS codec deliver virtually delay-free, high-resolution video signals with minimal bandwidth requirement. Image quality is extremely high, free of video artifacts and frame drops. The low bandwidth overhead reduces energy and cooling requirements, resulting in lower CO2 emissions and significant cost savings.

High-resolution video transmission over 1G bandwidth

IHSE offers the new JPEG XS extenders as DisplayPort1.2 and HDMI2.0 models for 1G bandwidth network systems. In addition to the video/audio stream, the extenders transmit keyboard and mouse commands and are compatible with classic Draco vario extenders. Further variants for 3G bandwidth systems are to follow in the future.

The 1G variants enable video resolutions of 4K60 and 5K60 (1440p). Other computer signals such as USB 2.0 can be transmitted in the same data stream with the addition of add-on modules. All existing add-on modules are suitable for use with the new JPEG XS extenders.

Upgrade option for existing Draco ultra installations

IHSE is inviting users of existing Draco ultra extender solutions to upgrade their HDMI and DP extenders to the new JPEG XS platform via a firmware upgrade.

The JPEG XS extenders are designed to work with Draco tera KVM matrices. For maximum reliability, all variants in the series are also available with an additional redundant data path.
